On the rails of the Gauls

On this route we will follow the perimeter road of the northern edge of Kaliakouda Mountain and meet the beautiful villages of south  east Evritania, including Krikello and Domnista. If you want to return the same way you can make a little trip to a soil road - a unique natural beautiful landscap and arrive through the villages Sygkrello and Aniada to Klafsi, where  you can admire its unique early Christian monument.

Leaving Karpenissi follow the road to Ag. Nikolaos. A small sign on the right leads to Myriki, a quiet village with the church of Prophet Elias in a serene plateau at the top of it. In the center of Myriki visit the church of Ag. Georgiou built in 1898.

Continuing towards to Ag. Nikolaoss, the first totally green village we meet while going down from the Rachi of Velouchi (coming from Lamia). It is 9 km away from Karpenissi, built amphitheatrical in a wooded area surrounded by chestnut trees, plane trees, nut and fruit trees. In winter the village square usually has snow. If you are there during this period it is and ideal suggestion to try the local drink "tsipouro" and baked chestnuts on the fire. The site houses the church of Ag. Nikoloas of Vounena built in 1887 that was formerly the convent of Virgin Mary and which was destroyed a few years before the 1821 revolution. Also, the whole village was destroyed by fire from the occupying troops of Nazi in the years 1943 to 1944 but the houses were rebuilt and regained its previous charming form. From the village square a road begins for about two kilometers to the northwest, which leads through the dense forest of firs in the chapel of Ag. Paraskevi built in 1850. Ag. Nikolaos is famous for its rich production of chestnuts and beans. Near the village the places Krania,  Nerakia, Trifyllies and  Gyalos have untapped sources of sulphurous water and lands of unexplored coal deposits.

The road of the Pilgrims

On our way we will meet many typical evritanian villages such as the historical Koryschades, the cute Voutiro and Nostimo, the beautiful Mikro and Mega Chorio, which most of the have a remarkable tourism infrastructure. There we can stop for a coffee under the shade of plane trees, to taste the local cuisine and enjoy a drink before the sun sets. Leaving Karpenissi the first village you will meet is the picturesque Gorgianades perched at an altitude of 900 m. Continuing on the main road of Potamia on the left we find the church of Panagia of Mesabelias, dedicated to the Assumption. This church is the only remnant of the monastery that was destroyed in 1821. The locals built a whole new church. A portable icon of of Ag. Tryphon of the 18th century is extremel interesting.

The beautiful Xelidona Mountains

To explore the beauty of Chelidona mountain the traveler should choose the road to Frangistes, bridge of Episkopi and Agrinio. From Bagasaki area you should follow the sign that points to Fidakia and enter to the soil roads of Chelidona. The route runs through the wooded slopes of the mountain, passes by the "forgotten" villages Stefani and Sella and reaches Fidakia. The village is at an altitude of 700 m., has few residents, but enchants the visitor with its stone houses and red roofs. Nearby there are traces of the fortress (objects of an ancient settlement are found). It is speculated that the famous ancient Ichalia may has built in this location.

From here the descent is breathtaking as the old trees create the right frame of panoramic images of the lake of Kremaston. The road passes through Ag.  Vlacherna and ends at the point where the river Trikeriotis meets the lake, branching south to the villages of Sarkini, Velota, Aspropirgos, Proussos or north towards the village Agalianoi, passes the bridge of the Episkopi and goes to Anatoliki and Dytiki Frangista.

The Krenti village is the gateway to the beautiful and spectacular landscape, one of the most pure of our country. The area's name means "not written" and it is true, Agrafa are not written in the books of the "civilized" world. The mountains, rivers, forests still hold the leading part in the landscape and the visitors simply listen to the melody of silence of untouched nature.

From Krenti, a typical village of Agrafa, begins the road to the village Agrafa, a most beautiful route. From the very beginning of this journey, it offers spectacular, panoramic view of the valley of the river Agrafiotis. The road and the river live "parallel lives" and they first meet at bridge of Varvariadas. There will be three more meetings over the Agrafa bridges. Here, just after the bridge, look right down to the riverbed traces of furnaces the locals erect to make charcoal, supplying the capital Karpenissi. Immediately after that spot, a sign shows the detour for the asolated village Monastiraki, which is in 3 km.

Panta Vrexei Canyon

One of the most spectacular and beautiful areas of Evritania is the Panta Vrexei Canyon located between the villages Roska and Doliana at the south of the county.

The name means "always raining" and is due to the fact that in the gorge the flow of the icy water coming down the steep mountain Kaliakouda is not continuous and compact but decays to a wide range of small and large drops, creating a continuous artificial rain turning the already beautiful landscape into a breathtaking.

There are three routes you can choose to reach the canyon, all you have is to drive a car (a jeep is recommended) and then to hike into the river (river trekking) to reach the canyon. Try it and you will really be rewarded by the wild beauty of the landscapes you will see!

According to tradition, the foundation of the monastery is placed in the reign of the iconoclast emperor Theophilus (829-842 AD) and is linked to the adventures and the appearance of the holy icon of Virgin Mary from the Proussa of Bithynia (in Asia Minor) in the cave of this area.

The shelter of the icon is the exact location where the monastery was built, surrounded by a majestic and wild landscape. Today, the monastery is a place of pilgrimage believers from all over Greece.
